Welcome to Anna Banks Counseling! I’m glad you found me! Here is where you can read a bit about me, both personally and professionally.

Personal Bio: I became a transplant from rural Texas to urban Massachusetts a decade ago when I moved here to attend grad school. The transition from these two rather different cultures took a bit of time, but long story short, I warmed up to Boston and now happily live in Cambridge with my husband and four kids. When I’m not working, I try not to act like a therapist and instead enjoy music, the outdoors, reading and writing, and spending time with people I like. 

Professional Bio: I have two degrees in social work: a bachelor’s from West Texas A&M University (2012), and a master’s from Boston College (2014). After multiple years of working in the world of social work, including adoption and hospice social work, I became an outpatient therapist and eventually opened a private practice providing individual, couples, and group therapy. 

What I Offer: My primary clinical focus is providing high quality couples and family counseling using an Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT) framework. I have found EFT to be uniquely powerful in helping clients move from difficult and confusing relationships into relationships marked by mutual trust and understanding. I am highly committed my own clinical growth via training and consultation to make sure I’m providing the best and most effective couples/family counseling I can!

I have a secondary interest in helping people recover from relational trauma, such as neglect and abuse; this history often comes up in the process of couples or family work. I have training from Bessel van der Kolk & his colleagues and include both mind and body in treatment. If you care for a child with a trauma history, I am a Trust-Based Relational Intervention practitioner and enjoy supporting parents, especially foster & adoptive parents.

For both individuals & couples, I’m comfortable incorporating clients’ faith and spirituality into therapy as they find it helpful. I also facilitate therapeutic support groups that focus on the spiritual practice of lament.
